Opening Day Predictions
For those of you who haven’t figured it out yet . . . I’m a closet sports fan.
Which puts me in the minority with the people I run with.
Nonetheless . . . I’m stepping out into jock-dem and making my Opening Day 2007 Predictions.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
East - Boston Red Sox (add Dice-K and Drew to an already good team)
Central - Detroit Tigers (added Sheffeild to an already great team)
West - Oakland Athletics (I have a good feeling the Angels will win, but the A’s are my team)
Wild Card - Minnesota Twins (if I was more sure of the health of Liriano, I’d put them as the most dangerous team out there, and the best team in baseball dollar for dollar)
MVP - Alex Rodriguez (he’s starting to get his stuff together . . . I think)
Cy Young - Johan Santana (going out on a limb)
NATIONAL LEAGUE
East - Philadelphia Phillies (I hate the Mets and think the Braves lack offense)
Central - Milwaukee Brewers (decided to get crazy with this one, I think the Cubs have too many “head” issues and the Cardinals have no pitching)
West - Los Angeles Dodgers (best all around NL team?)
Wild Card - Atlanta Braves (home town bias, but I do have a good feeling about this team, plus Hudson and James will have huge years)
MVP - Albert Pujols (another big stretch, if I had to pick someone else I’d say D. Lee or Chase Utley)
Cy Young - Carlos Zambrano (he’s real good, especially with offense backing him up)
BTW - I only have 3 fantasy baseball teams.
why aren’t we in a fantasy league together? i too only have three, which is pretty low for me!
and to many “head” issues for the Cubs? like what?
and zambrano will never win a cy young until he can get his “head” issues figured out. and i am a cubs fan.
my picks:
AL:
East: Boston
Central: Detroit
West: Oakland
Wild Card: Cleveland
NL
East: Mets
Central: Cubs
West: Dodgers
Wild Card: Braves
MVP: Aramis Ramirez
Cy Young: Roy Oswalt
If the Braves indeed play in October, it will only be because of their pitching staff (viva la smoltz) and their outfield. Andruw Jones could have been the best acquisition since Dale Murphy in ‘76.
in 2005 i bought my detroit tigers hat. i looked like a fool. in 2006, well, all the people who watched me buy that hat were dispersed across the nation (stupid hurricane). but this year. this year i just look like i hopped on the bandwagon. and it sucks.
but i like your banner.
i like the brewers pick…they’ve got great balance
Here is my assessment…
I love this sort of stuff!
AL-
East: NY Yanks - A.Rod, Jeter on offence, Pettite’s back and maybe the Rocket. If they play to their potential, its a no brainer. But hey, I’m a big fan
Central: Detroit will be back. Same team, but now with playoff experience. Very strong pitching core still…the Gambler’s not gone for good either…
West: LA Angels - this division is a team short and LA dominates…
Wild: Twins - good offence and best pitcher in league
NL-
East: Phillies…man these guys have some sticks!
Central: STL Cards - The Cards just aren’t going to drop out of the playoffs all together after winning it all last year. they play very well as a team…
West:SD Padres - Okay, this is my crazy pick. I think these guys are a very well balanced team, they have offence, defence and pitching. plus, they finished out strong last year in the 2nd half
Wild: Braves will sneak in there! they are so dangerous when they decide to swing the bat!
Cy: CC Sabathia (i know it will be Johann though!)
MVP: AROD - don’t know why I think this, but this guy is gonna do REALLY good or REALLY bad. We’ll see what happens…
i don’t know why i forgot about the indians.
i take it all back. the indians are my pick to win it all.
i love this team. and they were way better than their record last year.
any talk about arod being really bad is overblown. he had a terrible season supposedly and pansy torre insulted him by dropping him in the lineup, and he hit .290 35 121.
and i’m no arod apologist. people need to ease off, 95% of guys in baseball would kill for those numbers
[...] I was a little off last year. But this year it’ll be different. [...]
