LOST Recap

There’s not a show out there that keeps you guessing quite like LOST. Literally, glued to my seat the whole time and thinking about way too much after it’s over with.

Ok. Juliet is a lying little winch. But I think we should cut her some slack. I’m pretty sure she’s only doing it so she can get off the island.

I’m not so sure Jack isn’t in on it too. But without Juliet knowing. I’d hate to think that Jack would stoop to that. But you never know.

I hate Ben with a passion now. Can’t stand him. He’s just playing mind games. He’s a liar. But for some reason I do believe he keeps his word. I think it’s the “cult” thing they are a part of. Some written law that he can’t break his word. But I do think he lies and manipulates and does everything he can so as not to have to keep his word.

A couple of things about upcoming episodes. There is going to be a flashback to the old Dharma people who founded it . . . the DeGroots. They started it with Hanso. I’m thinking this is going to show Ben’s relationship to the island. I think Karen DeGroot is his mom or adopted mom. Or something.

And I think the season ending episode is going to feature a showdown between the Losties and the Others. Which is probably what Ben was referring to when he said he would see Juliet in a week.

MASTER THEORY

Ok. Here’s the deal. I read a graphic novel called The Watchmen last week (it’s by the guy who wrote V Is For Vendetta). It was amazing. It’s like a comic book but better. Which I know half of you wouldn’t be caught dead reading. But the 2 producers said it’s the most influential and best piece of fiction ever. It’s one of the first novels to use meta-fiction as a literary device. Which is what LOST is. Stories within stories and told in a non-linear way.

But anyway . . . I’m going to give you the big picture of the book. And you should be able to get a big picture of my theory.

There are a bunch of crime fighting heros. They’re not superheros. Just regular humans with no superpowers outside of fighting crime and using some weapons that they invent. There is this one guy who accidentally gets caught in a machine that separates isotopes or something. I don’t know. Basically the guy then becomes a superhero. He can bend time. Travel time. Teleport. All kinds of good stuff. Just like Desmond.

Then there is this other guy who is a normal guy (no superpowers). But he’s the smartest person on the planet. His name is Adrian Veidt (Hanso). Veidt is also the wealthiest man on the planet. So Veidt is getting tired of all the wars that are going on especially between Russia and the US (which is what the first Dharma video in the hatch was about . . . the end of the world and the Valentia equation - Hurley’s numbers - that predicted it . . . remember the Chinese guy on the film reel that Locke found).

So stay with me . . . to end all of the wars and the threat of war . . . Veidt (Hanso) decides he needs to create a common threat that will unite the world. And distract it from mutually destroying each other. So he buys an island. Hires artists and scientists to work there (Dharma) to create a monster that can read people’s minds and make them see things that will literally scare them to death when they see them. Starting to sound like the Smoke Monster yet?

Veidt’s superhero name is Ozymandias. The Greek name for Ramses II. There is a common poem about Ozymandias below:

In Egypt’s sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows: –
“I am great OZYMANDIAS,” saith the stone,
“The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
“The wonders of my hand.” – The City’s gone, –
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

This reminds me of the leg of the statue that was at the end of Season Two when Sun, Jin, & Sayid were sailing around the island. And they saw the old statue of a crumbling leg.

There are a lot more subtle little things within the novel. But that’s a big picture.

If you’re still reading . . . this is what I think.

The Hanso Foundation started the Dharma Initiative to create this monster. To balance out the equation and prevent the world from going to war with itself. There’s another group that was either originally a part of Dharma or separate altogether that is now run by Mittelos Bioscience. The group that Ben is the leader of. There is another guy somewhere named Jacob (Ben himself or something metaphorical). These guys took control of the island to keep Dharma from unleashing the monster. This happened during the purge that Mikali talked about a couple of weeks ago. Ben and the Others despite their mischievous ways are doing what they think is the right thing in their saving the world.

Does your head hurt yet?

Not of any importance right now, maybe part of the cult, but the marking on the tree where the drop-off was for Ethan and now Juliet, is the same mark that was branded on Juliet. Was her trial really a trial? Or did she officially become one of them.

Josh dude you scare me. It’s like you have a copy of the script or something. I get the whole monster thing you’re talking about, but what about the fertility studies? Do you think the monster has the power to keep women from getting pregnant and Ben and his people are trying to develop a drug to counter act it?

John Q Thanks for ruining the ending of the novel for those of us that haven’t had the chance to read it yet.

Doode, well thought out. I can’t believe you like that show even more than I do. We have a little Lost Party every Wednesday with part of our faith community. I’m going to share your theory with them and see what they say.
