The Browns & Their CO2.

We release 35,032 pounds (rough estimate) of carbon emissions a year.

You should check out this calculator courtesy of the EPA. (ht: CoolPeopleCare)

It’s pretty cool. And although it gives you a rough estimate. It lets you adjust the scale to take into consideration things like recycling, reducing mileage. Just with the few changes we’ve made over the last year we’ve reduced our emissions by over 4,000 lbs. Which equals 11% of our total. And we haven’t even done that much.

Check it out.

I’m sure the lame-ass filter at work will block those sites, but… do they give an indication as to what’s alot of CO2? I mean, 35,000 pounds certainly seems like alot, but how does that compare to a volcano? Or to a nomad in North Africa?

Or even better – let’s say we wanted to calculate how much CO2 all the plants in the world absorb a year. If we take that number, divide by number of people in the world (to get average CO2 we could each put out to break even), where does 35k lb’s fall on that scale?

speaking of asinine.

And let’s not forget that 11% of the world’s greenhouse gases come from cattle. (All that methane.) If we just ate more chicken (those Chik-Fil-A cows were right after all).

The site is good, but it doesn’t give you the option of selecting your energy as coming from wind or solar power (our house made the switch a few months ago.) There are websites all over that can get people hooked up to wind power in their local area. I wonder how many people would switch if they knew they had the choice.

I like that the site admits that recycling can be detrimental to the environment. . . I don’t believe in recycling. . . except with aluminum cans.

Ahh the now-famous word, the key to not actually have to address what someone is saying… ‘asinine.’ I’ll just take that as a, ‘hey, good questions. I don’t have a clue what the answer is.’

Wasn’t even being asinine, was being serious. I mean, if we want to have fun, let’s just change the units:

35,032 pounds… whatever, you give off 15,890,247 grams of CO2. whoa!

Now that’s asinine.

There has to be some way to measure the marginal benefit of reducing emission by 1 pound of CO2, so that someone can accurately weigh that against everything else.

And if we want to bring back GAP, we could just ask the people who received the benefit from the money if they’d rather have the extra funding/aid, or nothing at all. They’re probably in a better position to answer the question than anyone here.

eric. perhaps my comment was the asinine one. perhaps by intentionally calling you for a non-asinine comment . . . i strategically implored the strategy of asininity myself.

and the gap comment was for nick.

Dude, until you can put out something less than 1.58902479 × 10^10 milligrams of CO2 each year, I can’t follow your philosophizing into the very core, the very heart of asininity itself.

Or maybe I can, and I’m merely perpetuating the thread.
