Jack Bauer Is Dead . . . To Me (also known as light content Tuesdays . . . or at least for this particular Tuesday)

24.jpg

I can’t tell you how impartially neutral I am towards 24. From what I hear . . . I’ve missed the last 2 episodes and haven’t thought twice about it. So far this season that would be 7 episodes that I was not at home to watch. I remember when I used to force myself to be home on a given night. Or watching 8 episodes in one evening with Anna sitting at the foot of the bed biting her nails.

Those were the days.

Now Jack Bauer is boring. The writers suck and lack any type of creativity. Or story telling ability. I’m not sure why they went ahead this season and did the same thing with nuclear weapons, etc. They could have just focused on his time in a Chinese prison or played out that storyline a bit. Even now (since I’ve heard it through the grapevine) that they are developing the story with the Chinese . . . it just seems way too predictable. And they forced Bill to resign? How ghetto is that?

Plus . . . LOST is what it is . . . but does anyone else watch Heroes? Are you kidding me? That show is incredible and last night was no exception. Especially with their nod to string theory. But that’s how you tell a story. With narrative arcs . . . with character development . . . with multiple time lines . . . with “conflicts” and characters that are gray and not so black and white.

That’s the way you have to tell stories these days to keep me interested. If not, I’m just going to go read a book.

Maybe I’ll get into 24 again one day and I’ll issue a formal apology.

But for now . . . there are only 3 . . . LOST, The Office, and Heroes.

Everything else is rubbish.

Eat my shorts.

Damn it dude - you took this post before I could write it. I’ll write it again though, I think.

24 was SO boring last night. Ugh.

Predictable, boring…no thank you. I’ll finish the season just to finish it, but I’m done with 24. Now you’re wanting me to check out Heroes…

i’ve been keeping up with 24 this season, but only because i don’t want to give up on it. i agree with adam, last night’s episode was quite boring…and it’s been that way most of this season. everything’s become predictable. or lame.

lost is getting better and better every episode. i’ll admit i wasn’t initially on the bandwagon, especially during the first season, but it’s proven itself now.

and heroes…wow. such a great show. we’ve been watching it since day one and it has yet to disappoint. it is only the first season, though… 24 was awesome…but maybe seven seasons is just asking too much. we’ll see where lost is if it’s still around at season seven.

the office = best comedy on tv.

Heroes. Missed a lot, read about it, waiting for the DVD to come out so I can watch it all in one weekend. And become obsessed even more. Last night, though… when Future Peter and Future Sylar faced off… even for about 2 seconds… whoa. And I still like anything involving swordplay.

Heroes is the bomb. I started watching at about episode 15, then started watching the rest on the web (the whole season is available on nbc.com). We finally got a DVR, so now I can watch stuff after we get the kids to bed. But I’m still careful about not getting into many shows, and Heroes is pretty much it right now.

Last night was on par with “Company Man” as one of my favorite episodes this season.

I think it’s hard for any show like 24, Lost, X-Files, etc. to really do well past 4-5 seasons. I’d be really surprised if Heroes is as good as it is now after that many seasons (it it lasts that long).

i agree about the potential for it to play itself out.

but that’s what makes LOST and Heroes different.

they aren’t self-sustaining seasons. there more like soap operas. they continue season to season.

whereas shows like 24 and Grey’s Anatomy are smart in making each episode connect from week to week instead of the standard sitcom format.

LOST and Heroes are telling stories that have a 5 year narrative arc (both producers have said they’re done after season 5, and they could force into 6 if they had to). so not only does each episode build on each other. but each season builds on. there are threads that run through them and to them

the scarlet thread of the bible anyone? :)

anyway . . . they all connect. they tell a story. therefore, in theory as long as they maintain a fan base . . . the story will continue to build.

whereas 24 is rather elementary with it’s stand alone seasons. although they try to build off some of the plot from previous seasons . . . it’s pretty obvious they follow the same format and storyline each season. with only occasional nods to previous seasons.

Since I’m still too foolish to watch LOST (Josh’s sentiment, not mine) or 24 or Heroes, here’s my addition to this conversation:

The New Math: Cheap Alternatives to Cable Television - post on a great personal finance blog about ditching TV, and picking up everything you want exclusively through Netflix and iTunes Music Store. Choice quote:

“It’s my goal to convince Kris that we can kill the cable connection completely. I will promise to buy her anything she wants from the iTunes Music Store if we can kill the cable. Why would I make this bargain? If our cable bill costs us $789.94/year, we could take that money and purchase 22 different programs from the iTunes Music Store. There’s no way we could keep up with that many shows. We could buy anything we wanted to watch from the iTunes Music Store and still pay less than we currently spend on cable television.”

I agree…24 sucks! I missed the boat on watching Heroes so I am waiting for the DVDs.

    LOST RULES!!

  10. [...] already beat me to it, but I had to say it too (and I know Zach is going to really enjoy this [...]

After being faithful viewers of the previous seasons, we watched the first four episodes of 24 this year and dropped it completely. So sad to see a good show go downhill :(

On the other hand - Heroes? Rocks.

man . . . if i would have known jack bauer would have brought all you new people out from behind the scenes . . . i would have blogged this a long time ago.

nice to see so many new faces. nice to meet you.

jack should have died after season three. greedy producers make everything suck.

Because I’ve watched for all the other seasons, I’ve got to go ahead and finish this season of 24, just to end it. Even the “surprises” are predictable. It does appear, though, that Jack is discovering his soul, sort of, this season.

This will apparently be blasphemy(sp?) to write these words on this blog, but I never did “get” Lost, have never been able to understand it-even with Josh’s articulate recaps - maybe my mind is too simplistic…please don’t hate me!

    oh i definitely hate you.
