Speaking of FOX News – Coulter Is At It Again.

Ann Coulter is at it again. This time saying “If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”

Where’s Hannity on this one?

UPDATE: Please see Derek’s comment below for a full transcript and the context with which it was said. Accordingly, I revise my critique to include Bill Maher for his insensitive remarks.

Now you know why I don’t watch the news shows, regardless of the channel. Reading is much more enjoyable.

Context, Josh, context!

From MediaMatters (http://mediamatters.org/items/200706260001?f=h_topic):

“Good Morning America co-anchor Chris Cuomo asked Coulter if the fact that “the three top [Republican] candidates” denounced her remark about Edwards was ‘[f]air criticism of you or a shift towards the tolerant among the GOP.’ Coulter answered: ‘No, no. … I was denounced all over.’ She went on to add:

COULTER: Though about the same time Bill Maher said — and by the way I did not call John Edwards the ‘F’ word. I said I couldn’t talk about him because you go into rehab for using that word.

When Cuomo responded: ‘You say — you were joking,’ Coulter said:

COULTER: Oh yeah, I wouldn’t insult gays by comparing them to John Edwards. That would be mean, but about the same time — you know — Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished [Vice President] Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack. So I’ve learned my lesson. If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he has been killed in a terrorist assassination plot. ”

She’s referring to the fact that Maher said such a thing about Dick Cheney. Now Maher had backpedaled from that statement, so we can argue about whether or not Coulter is accurate when she describes Maher’s comment as “not a joke.”

But to have her recent comment taken out of context is low. Without the context, it’s horrendous. Within the context, it’s a valid point – that Maher’s comment about Cheney was much more insidious than her comment about Edwards.

Exactly, Derek! Although I don’t comment much on the blog, I did just happen to hear this interview with Coulter on “Good Morning, America” and agree that, in and of itself, it is horrific – but as you point out the total context in which she made the remark does matter…and I’m just sayin’ let’s be fair on all sides…Although let quickly me go on record as definitely NOT being a Coulter fan…I think she’s totally out of control and downright offensive, a la’ Rosie…and hats off to you, Josh – you can certainly keep some stuff stirred up – I mean, lively conversations going!

fair enough derek.

although i don’t think there is any context that would be fitting to say that.

but i agree. maher should be called out as an ass too for saying that.

please see my revised post.
and while we’re at it . . . let’s just further clarify something else. maher is definitely wrong. but he doesn’t have a long history of insensitive remarks like Coulter. and if we’re going to be fair on that, i’m sure his comments were in the context of referring to something that Cheney had said that was very similar.

well… how about this one from the lovely Coulter:

I do think anyone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using ‘hijack’ and ‘religion’ in the same sentence

Look around for Maher’s context, he was pretty specific. And he has a long string of very insensitive remarks – he’s been in the politically incorrect business for some time (before it was popular).

Actually, I find it quite funny that Coulter would complain about Maher, because as far as I’m concerned they’re cut from the some mold, just on different sides of the political spectrum. I just think Coulter is funnier because I tend to agree with her underlying political point. But having read several of her books, I can say that her comments in the past year have grown in their ugliness. Perhaps this is due to the Republicans losing power last year, like what has happened to the left since 2000.

As far as a comparison to Rosie, there’s simply isn’t one. If you can get past Coulter’s style, her substance is legit. She’s just incredibly insensitive. Rosie is borderline insane and is willing to latch onto whatever nutty theory she’s been exposed to. There’s a big difference.

The thing that is a shame is that Godless is actually a great book.
