The Evolutionary Trajectory of the Story of God (or it’s more commonly held name – Scripture).

god.jpg

For the next couple of weeks (I’m not sure how long it will take me) I’m going to attempt to discuss “the Bible”, sharing my thoughts on inspiration, puppets, contradictions, the authors, the Holy Spirit, and what I perceive to be it’s evolutionary trajectory. And I don’t mean evolutionary in timeline but rather in nature and essence.

Or in plainer terms . . . why I love Scripture, take a “liberal” perspective, and still think the Jesus Seminar is fundamentally flawed.

D10 asked a great question in the comments of this thread in regards to homosexuality. And I probably can’t begin to give a good an answer to that without providing some broad framework for how I approach the B-I-B-L-E, also known as the book for me.

So this is an invitation to enter into the fray. I am by no means an expert. In fact, I’m closer to a fool than an academic. But if you have some specific thoughts or questions that you’d like me to muse on . . . now is your time to share them. I’ll do my best to give you my thoughts in a coherent way.

Or you can sit back, grab a beer, and watch the explosions. (wink)

btwAnna took the great picture that I’m using in the artwork.

If you’re really bored you can read copies of some my “tamer” thoughts from 2005 that I shared with a group of students. It was a little series I called Patchwork: The Bible As Mosaic, that was based on Neil Livingstone‘s article entitled The Glorious Patchwork that you can get in pdf format here.

Week One, Week Two, Week Three, or these random thoughts from last year

what can i say? i have to admit i’ve been looking forward to when you might finally write this series of posts, mainly bc i feel like i’ve never heard you really go all out and explain where you’re coming from. people like to disagree about things, but i feel like this is finally getting to the heart of it – how a person views scripture. granted, i expect a great deal of parallel *and* perpendicular thinking/conversation, but i think understanding where a person is coming from is a grand step.
