Civic Responsibility.

I’m out of town all week on vacation. To pass my blogging time away, I’ve got a couple of really great thoughts from the book The European Dream that I’ve been reading. Enjoy.

“Much of the motivation behind American civic-mindedness can be traced back to the individualistic and religious roots of the American character. In most of Europe, by contrast, the civil society is far more secular in its orientation and less tied to the Christian notion of individual charity and more to the socialist idea of collective responsibility for the welfare of the community.”
