Karate Kid & The Most Overplayed Church Illustration.
Turns out Johnny is making a movie about the gospel and is centering it on the most overplayed church illustration ever used. Seeing how I’ve heard it about 1 million times in my life. You know the one with the draw bridge operator whose son gets stuck on the bridge and has to make the choice whether to save his son or the train. While I’m not to sure about the theology behind it and while I hate to admit it, the trailer doesn’t look that bad. And it might be a nice little film.

Josh,
This film’s been out for a few years, actually. A group of us from Imago watched it this summer. You’re right – the illustration is definitely overplayed and drew a “ho-hum” from yours truly at first, but it’s beautifully-shot (reminded me of Eternal Sunshine). Though the “father sacrificing his son to save a world that doesn’t seem to notice anything happened” theme is impossible to miss (there isn’t much else to it), the Christian overtones are otherwise surprisingly less overt than I would have expected. Great soundtrack, too.
So, watch + enjoy it to whatever extent you like, bu don’t expect to convert a stadium full of people by paying to have it screened on a jumbotron. (Is anybody still doing that?)
