Our podcast got transcribed from one of Slice of Laodicea and Ingrid’s henchmen. Ken Silva does a nice job of slamming us. Thanks for the link Ken!

Some beautiful reflections on Buy Nothing Day, our shared contradictions, and fashion among other things.

New podcast up with my personal friend Ed Stetzer, from my old Southern Baptist days.

Rudy Giuliani makes an excellent point (ht: Cindy Bryan). I only wish he didn’t want to resort to the same tactics that we’ve always used to resolve those struggles. Excerpt below . . .

I get very, very frustrated when I . . . hear certain Americans talk about how difficult the problems we face are, how overwhelming they are, what a dangerous era we live in. I think we’ve lost perspective. We’ve always had difficult problems, we’ve always had great challenges, and we’ve always lived in danger.

Do we think our parents and our grandparents and our great grandparents didn’t live in danger and didn’t have difficult problems? Do we think the Second World War was less difficult that our struggle with Islamic terrorism? Do we think that the Great Depression was a less difficult economic struggle for people to face than the struggles we’re facing now? Have we entirely lost perspective of the great challenges America has faced in the past and has been able to overcome and overcome brilliantly? I think sometimes we have lost that perspective.

Do you know what leadership is all about? Leadership is all about restoring that perspective that this country is truly an exceptional country that has great things that it is going to accomplish in the future that will be as great and maybe even greater than the ones we’ve accomplished in the past. If we can’t do that, shame on us.

  1. Hello Josh,

“Our podcast got transcribed from one of Slice of Laodicea and Ingrid’s henchmen.”

Actually, though Ingrid is a friend of mine, this “henchman” (at least the elite emerging church is above name-calling) has nothing to do with Slice of Laodicea.

“Ken Silva does a nice job of slamming us.”

Well Josh, I hope you’ll think with me for a moment here. For you see, on your podcast I saw my Christian beliefs called “disturbed,” mockingly referred to as “medieval,” and then compared to that of wild-eyed (think Monty Python) witch-hunters.

Ok; now, as odd as it might seem Josh, I actually came away with the idea that it was really you and Doug Pagitt who were the ones doing the slamming.

    I know, kinda weird, huh?

  3. Grr. I was having a nice day, and then your links above took me to Slice of Laodicea, Ken Silva, and others. After a bit of a random click fest, I’m just blown away about how much anger there is over there. All that indignation rubs off on the reader after a while.

Do you ever find yourself wishing that people would take a step back and look at themselves, and how they come across? [and then humbly realise you need to do it for yourself, too]

  4. Josh,

    “indeed. thanks again ken!”

    Yeah, buddy! :-)

re. Andrew - “I’m just blown away about how much anger there is over there.”

Hmm, let’s paraphrase the rest of his comment this way:

Do you ever find yourself thinking that people ought to take a step back and consider that all the anger there is over at websites like Apprising Ministries and Slice just might actually be coming from the Lord?

Because the fact is that it would be a real good idea for you to ask the Lord to open your eyes so that you might see the dark red sky this morning and recognize the time in which you now live.

  5. i suppose if you think the world is shitty and full of shit you would think that god is angry and that the sky is dark.

but if you think there is still hope and life left in the tom foolery of the kingdom of god then you might have a different perspective.

    watashi wa!

  7. Josh,

I just wanted to say that I laughed out loud at the last comment you left on this post. In fact, I’m still laughing. Might be the first time I’ve ever interpreted an expletive as, quite literally, a “holy shit”.

  9. BTW you ‘techies’ should probably pot down the background track so we can actually hear your voices.

  11. Speaking of Monty Python skits… I always imagine the “help help I’m being repressed! See the violence inherent in the system!” every time I hear these emergents complain about Ken.

  14. If the seeker friendly movement filled our churches with false professions of a shallow Christianity, I have little doubt that you and your like will be the ones to clean them out again. For if there were no heresies among us, those who falsely professed Christ would be much harder to recognize (1 Corinthians 11:19; Romans 16:17).

Submit to Scripture. The hardest of all idol to destroy is the one we set up in the throne room of our own imaginations. It is built of a substance so strong, that to destroy it would require a powerful instrument more sharper than any two-edged sword: The Bible (Hebrews 4:12).

Hehehe. I missed the Bible verse that says, “God demands us to make angry personal attacks against people we don’t understand.”

I am still waiting for Ken to attack Ingrid for being a woman and asserting authority.

And I still think that all of those sites may be parodies. They can’t be real. Right?

Josh - you have made the big time; getting attacked by Ken is big stuff. Pretty soon he will talk about you in another post, and mention Rick Warren, Brian McClaren, Purpose Driven, and Emergent - you know, you need to make sure you keep increasing the search engine hits.

  16. this is really sad. as far as i can tell, everyone is slamming everyone. it doesn’t seem very constructive or loving, it’s just mean.

  17. …and by the way, i feel bad for john piper. at least what he said to his daughter was informed by his theology, whether we agree with him on that point or not. what theology informed the way you and mr. paggit “slammed” him?

i generally liked your blog, until this back and forth with ken silva caught my attention. as far as i’ve been able to tell, most exchanges with him haven’t been very edifying to anyone, and this one is no different.
