Ken Silva Is A Great Watch Dog

cyberwatchdog.jpg

We’ve got 2 new blogger awards that I’m announcing here . . . FIRST, the CYBER WATCH-DOG BLOGGER AWARD. After Ken Silva combed through my comments and found me using the word “shit” (read to the bottom of his last post), he has further pointed out the error of my ways. Ken is a great example of what a blogger should be. Using an interesting medium to call into question and place checks and balances on the rampant power surge by those at the top. Who I am self-declaring is me.

Because of his careful, watchful, and discerning eye . . . Ken is the first winner of this award. For someone who truly knows that the Lord (pronounced Laaaard) wants us to take ourselves seriously at all times . . . I raise my keg of beer, my communist flag, and my red letter bible and solute you. Congratulations Ken!

SECOND, the Emergent Of The Week That Is Going To A Literal Hell Award. For this award I would like to proudly nominate my friends Nick, Adam, & Tony. Congratulations guys!

Thanks for giving me a new life goal.

Nick, Adam, Tony, Josh, and all the rest – thanks for doing what you’re doing. The spaces you’ve created are invaluable.

Perhaps another round of winks is in order? ;-)

While i’m all about putting people in their place i wouldnt waste any of that amazing creative energy you have on slamming this Silva douche. He’s obviously got no life to speak of and spends his time picking apart other peoples lives.

and when it really comes down to it we know jesus cares about words like shit, fuck, and damn because the bible clearly states it somewhere.

First clean up your mouth then love your neighbor. i think thats something the white bearded, blue eyed saviour once said. i’m not really sure though, its been a while since i cracked open the good book.

    Corey,

Maybe you should crack open your Bible more often so you know the truth of God.

    2 Timothy 2:16
But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,

    Colossians 3:8
But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

    Ephesians 4:29
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for
edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

    Ephesians 5:4
and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

I could go on and on but I think those verses clearly state that type of talk is not necessary for Christians. You might want to think about 1 Corinthians 5:20 and what it means to be an ambassador of Christ.

I find the above post offensive as a person who claims to be a follower of Christ.

    Josh,

I guess you didn’t know those are not my words but the word of God. The truth is sharper than a two edge sword. I guess it hurts.

Hey Josh what does God mean when He says be holy like I Am holy. What does it mean when Jesus says if you love me you will obey my commandments?

It is one thing to desire not to sin and fall way short of perfection but it is another thing when you embrace it and say things like Corey said. Of course I wouldn’t expect anything different from a site that glorifies sin.

    Josh,

So to point out sin is wrong? Really? Hmm what did Jesus do to the your rich young ruler? Did he not point out his sin and what did Jesus let him do? Walk away sad. He didn’t tell him well its ok come and follow me anyways.

I guess I should just embrace sin, role in it, take part in it? We shouldn’t hold each other accountable? Try to encourage one another not to sin?

There is a huge difference between me and a pharisee you might want to read through Luke 18. I am the sinner sitting on the flour banging my chest asking God to forgive me for I am the worst of all sinners.

I don’t desire to sin against the God who was willing to die for me. If you claim to be a Christian then the desire not to sin against a perfect God should be a high priority.

You might also want to take a look at Ezekiel 33 and read about being a watchman.

“is it ok if i desire a sin drenched form of perfection?”

Hmm; well “Christ-follower,” what did Jesus say – “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)

Uh-oh, looks like perfection isn’t a sin…it’s a command to live up to. And then there’s that rascal Paul also upsetting the emerging worldly wagon:

“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.”

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.”

“But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

“All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.” (Philippians 3:10-16)

Near as I can tell, doesn’t look to me like you boyz iz even tyin’ here.

Keep embracing sin Josh and we will see how far it truly gets you. You might want to compare and contrast the life of Lot and Abraham. Both were “righteous” in the eyes of God but one had a jacked up life because of his desire to be worldly and embrace and live with sin.

If I come off serious its because it is a warning to you. I don’t regard you as enemy but as a brother. 2 Thes 3:15.

Turn to the Word of God for truth. You are buying into a man made religion. I hold my pastor, the authors I read, bloggers and the likes to scripture. It is the only thing I can trust for sure.

Anyways I can tell I am not welcomed for my ideas and thoughts so I will leave you to your cohorts.

Nah-uh; ‘les one is referring to the God-Man’s human nature.

But to the actual Jesus of the Bible, Hell is a very real place originally created for the Devil and his angels.

Matthew 25:41 to be exact, strait from Jesus’ mouth.

Not made up by humans but created by Jesus.

You might want to read all of chapter 25 so you can get the full gest of what Christ claims. It’s always good never to read a single Bible verse without taking it in context. Verse 46 in that passage reiterates that it is eternal punishment.

  35. daveNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 6:00 pm | Permalink

Hmmm… not sure that talks about a literal hell.

BUT… it is interesting who goes to this “hell,” isn’t it?

Not those with poor doctrine. Not emergents. Not watch dogs. Not liberals.

No… instead, it is those who do not feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner, or welcome the stranger.

If that passage really talks of a literal hell, I think there are a lot of people about who are quite confused about who might be there…

And Wes… didn’t you say this not long ago:

I will leave you to your cohorts.

    Yet you are back.

Are we too much fun to resist?

  36. WesNo Gravatar

    Dave,

Well when we want to talk scripture I am all about it. If people have real questions and seeking truth then I am willing to discuss. If people want to play games than I am out.

How many scriptures talk about hell? Dave go check Revelation 21:8. That also talks about who is going to hell or called the second death (separation from God).

Why do you deny such a clear scriptural truth. There is a hell and people are going to be punished eternaly. Can you tell me what the heck Jesus is talking about in this passage if it is not a place of eternal punishment?

Why not do a word study. Look up all the passages on hell, lake of fire, gnashing of teeth, outer darkness and let me know what all these passages mean if it is not a literal place.

Give me some scripture references that says there is not a hell. Give me any scriptutural evidence. Instead of opining your opinion.

  37. NicholasNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 6:28 pm | Permalink

Right you are. It appears this parable turns into a refutation on those who don’t perform righteous acts. I didn’t know Jesus had the understanding of hell as a place prepared for the devil and his angels. Or that Jesus believed that the ‘devil’ had angels. This is an interesting passage.

It makes me want to work for my salvation though.

Does this passage indicate heaven is a created place at the beginning of the earth?

And isn’t this passage actually from 250 CE? This wasn’t in original manuscripts right?

  38. NicholasNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 6:35 pm | Permalink

So if we do a word study are we to think that Jesus is reffering to the dump outside of the city that had constant fire?

  39. WesNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 6:51 pm | Permalink

    Nicholas,

You can’t work for your salvation. Ephesians 2:8-10. It is a free gift so that you may not boast.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

On your second point – You need to apply biblical hermeneutic to passages like that. When Jesus refers to gehenna there was a real place that Jesus was pointing to, to explain what hell is going to be like. Jesus is so good to use naratives, poetry, gospels, parables to communicate His truth to us.

If you need more examples read John 6 about Jesus saying He is the bread of life and unless you eat of my body you shall not have eternal life in heaven. Do you really think I have to eat the body of Jesus to be saved literally?

Roy Zuck’s has a great book on Biblical Hermeneutics. How to study the literary styles of the Bible and to help you know when things should be taken in a wooden literal sense and when things are types, shadows and metaphores..etc..

  43. WesNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 7:14 pm | Permalink

    Nicholas,

Again it goes back to knowing how to read literature and applying principals to interpreting scripture.

Ok lets throw out Matthew 25 if you want to. Tell me what is the second death John speaks about in Revelation 21:8. Do you know Jesus preached more times about hell than on heaven? I take scripture as a whole and let scripture support scripture instead of putting my own meaning into the text. Can you explain what I need to be “saved” from?

Read the first 3 chapters of Revelation and the 7 churchs. Can you tell me who is the person who overcomes? What are they overcoming from? Here is a hint for the answer 1 John 5:5

Young vs Old earth debate I could care less about (in house debate on the length of creation)but what I do care about is that Adam and Eve were created by God who sinned against God. If you don’t believe this then you better throw out everything Jesus said because He refers to Genesis and specificaly Adam and Eve on several accounts.

  44. WesNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 7:20 pm | Permalink

    Nicholas,

We better not throw out chapter 25 of Matthew. I couldnt remember if it was the end of Mark or Matthew but it is Mark.

Matthew 25 is found in the Barcelona Papyrus (dated 66 AD) (early manuscripts) Anyways there is more than enough scripture to prove an actual hell.

  45. NicholasNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 7:21 pm | Permalink

A reference to something doesn’t imply a subscription to a literal belief in it. The jews had a story to tell with adam an eve, it was an important story, referenced quite a bit, that doesn’t mean there were two individuals in the beginning.

Can we throw revelation out too? I mean it is a hodgepodge of apocalyptic literature. . . i mean come on a guy on an island by himself having visions.

If it is in dark print in my copy of the gospels according to the Jesus Seminar. . lets talk about it.

Why don’t we throw out the whole Bible and you guys just continue to believe what you want to believe?

How about study the Bible and instead of pouring your own meaning into it let it speak for itself.

Do you think the questions you are raising haven’t been addressed by people smarter than both you and I? Again I ask show me something from God that refutes what I am saying. Show me some scripture that says I am wrong?

You can speculate all you want. Can you show me the evidence that the Matthew 25 was added after the fact? Where is the evidence? Is Matthew 25 the only spot where Jesus or any other author talks about hell?

  49. NicholasNo Gravatar
    Posted November 27, 2007 at 9:19 pm | Permalink

There is no way to ’study the bible yourself’ you bring something to every text you encounter. It is a book. You bring the reading.

Josh – say what you will. According to the Jesus seminar, Jesus didn’t say these words in matthew 25:31-46. It is impossible, they were later editions. It is in dark black NOT in the bright red of certainty.
