Many apologies for my lack of posts this week. And for being a day late with my LOST recap. But here goes . . .
Last night was the best episode I’ve seen in about a year. It was crazy. And I no some people won’t be into the whole time travel, sci-fi thing as it develops, but as for me and my house . . . I can’t get enough of it. I absolutely love Desmond. He’s my favorite character by far. He’s the only guy who I truly empathize with. He’s been the one character who hasn’t been all over the place. Evil one week but good the next. Or vice versa. He’s been consistently and hopelessly wrecked because of his separation from Penny. And I love that.
So here are a couple of reflections . . . and ARE NOT spoilers. Just speculation
I think Michael was the one on the boat who left the door open Desmond & Sayid, when Mikownsky said, “Looks like you have a friend on the boat.”
I think it’s Charles Widmore’s boat. And Penny found out about his expedition and that’s how she kept trying to tap into the frequency to contact Desmond. That’s why “their boss” doesn’t want them answering the call when it came from her. It’s her dad and he’s trying to stop her.
Apparently, Desmond’s friends (the priest & the ring lady) from the past also went to Oxford at some point. Perhaps they visited Farraday as well.
I also think Daniel Farraday is experiencing the same things as Desmond. That’s why he put that Desmond will be his constant.
So the real question that begs to be asked is will Desmond be able to control it now? Will he be able to change it? And is this something different than what he experienced when he turned the fail-safe and the hatch imploded?
I wonder if Desmond is really in 1994 and is flashing to the future? Or if what happened in 94 really happened but he just forgot about it? Or is time just moving on multiple planes? But why didn’t he recognize Farraday in the present? So it’s clearly that they can change the course of time and the events in history.
There is also a good theory online that Charlie was Desmond’s first “constant”. Because he saw him in the past and he saw him in the present. And once Charlie died, he lost it and had to find another one.
Another great theory floating around is that the sickness that Danielle described is the same sickness that Desmond was experiencing. Which makes perfect sense. Wish I would have made that connection myself.
Crazy theory time . . . Jack and Kate go back to the island but do so in the far past and are the skeletons in the cave. Thus when they go back, they do so not in the present, but in the past, in order to change the events that will happen in the future. That’s really crazy I know. But the time travel stuff changes everything.
I didn’t get a chance to really spend any time on the message boards this week, which is where I get all my crazy theories and spoilers. I had a little thing called work. Surprising right?
Anyway . . . here are a couple of thoughts from last week that I never developed or thought more about.
Maybe Dharma is pissed at Ben because they never found out about the purge. And Ben has been working as a double agent for them. Going back and forth, lying to Dharma.
R.G. on Naomi’s bracelet is Regina on the ship. She sounds like Naomi. So perhaps she is Naomi’s sister as well.
Now for this week . . .
A couple of things first before I get into the Aaron, Kate’s baby talk.
Jack said that only 8 people survived the plane crash. But there are only 6 in the “Oceanic 6″. They obviously fabricated a whole story. So why 8 people? Were there really 8 people? Or was that just part of the story? And 2 more got off the island but didn’t make it to the mainland? Or 2 died while on the island? I thought that was an odd number to throw out.
Also . . . Daniel Faraday (Farday Cage?) and Charlotte with the cards? He picked 2 out of the 3 cards and was disappointed? Almost like everyone else was able to pick out all 3 of the cards or more. And Daniel is the only one who still can’t do it. So do they have the ability to see into the future? Or are they like Desmond?
I think we’re going to see more time travel, time warps, worm holes, and parallel universe stuff develop in the mythology of the show. So perhaps it’s something like that. I again reiterate my point that I don’t think any of the people who landed on the island are “bad” people. I think they just happen to be working for Dharma as agents or scientists. Although Miles seemed to know enough about everything going on with Ben and knew how powerful he was. And knew that Ben could get 3.2 million in only a week? So there is another way on and off the island besides the sub? Perhaps there is a time warp/portal somewhere on the island?
Anyway . . . 2 things with Aaron. My belief is that it’s Sawyer & Kate’s baby and not Claire’s Aaron. Although it’s possible that Jack wouldn’t want to come by and hang out with Kate and Aaron and have a relationship with Kate because it would be weird for him to assume the father role and be his uncle, I just don’t think that’s the case. I think Jack is just freaked out because it’s Sawyer’s baby. I also have a theory that Sawyer dies some point soon and sacrifices himself for Kate, Jack, and/or everyone. Which probably just adds another layer of complexity for Jack and freaks him out. But it’s good to see he still has feelings for her. At least for now.
There are spoilers below in a document. Feel free to scroll through at your risk.
We waited again to let the DVR catch up to bypass the commercials. So this will just be more of a recap.
I’ll post my recap/theories in a bit. For now, just reflections . . .
Miles is crazy. So Sayid was one of the Oceanic 6. Jack, Kate, Hurley, & Sayid. Who are the other 2? Oh wait, I already know.
Who did that guy work for? Why did Ben want Mr. Avolino(?) killed? Of course this implies that I know Sayid is working for Ben. Muahahhaaha!
Why was the cabin not where Locke remembered it? And why has Locke gone off the deep end?
What was Daniel trying to get shot to the island with the beacon? The payload?
Time on the island is 31 minutes slower?
Ben comes and goes off the island?
HOLY S!
Sayid was playing girl. Girl was playing Sayid. This is one epic war between Ben’s group and Dharma!
The girls was working for the same guy Naomi was. Hanso?
Driving home . . . reflections later. OMG!
*** AND NOW FOR THE REFLECTIONS AND THEORIES ***
I’m sticking with my theory that there are two groups . . . Dharma (the group Ben helped purge from the island) and the Others (Alpert, now Ben, and others). These two groups have been fighting back and forth for control of the island for a long time. One is good. The other is bad. One light. And the other dark.
Somehow Ben has been able to get off the island all this time and is perhaps reporting to someone else? Or maybe Jacob is really in charge. All I know is that Ben is a twisted little joker.
So I think Dharma finally gets control of the island (to the detriment of the world maybe?) and Ben flees and goes into hiding on the mainland. He starts working with the only people he knows and can trust (i.e. that he can still manipulate by holding something over their head). In this case Sayid. They are going around and killing the Dharma people that they know of that are on the “list”. Funny to see another list floating around. Only this time playing for keeps.
So I think Dharma gets control of the island. 6 people get off. Everybody else stays for a variety of reasons. Maybe they’re offered a choice to stay and assimilate with the new staff/crew of Dharma.
I think Naomi’s crew that landed from the freighter are nothing more than a hired crew. And they are clueless about the real reason they were chosen to be there. Perhaps they are the children of former Dharma people. Or perhaps they are just scientists that were promised the same sort of stuff that Mittelos promised to Juliet.
My crazy . . . crazy . . . crazy theory . . . the people who control time like Desmond, the clock watch lady, etc . . . they aren’t on either team. But are the real good guys who steer history while the two groups fight it out.
I’ll start LiveBlogging once the episode starts. Stay tuned.
8:30 pm Watching the intro now, Past, Present, Future. Decided to let it start a little late so we could watch it all at once via DVR.
8:36 pm Ben’s voice in the narration is so incredibly creepy, yet he almost sounds “normal” this time. I wonder if that’s on purpose. Trying to get us to change our mind about him subtlety.
8:51 pm Freeze-framing the Jacob scene as usual.
8:52 pm We have a severe weather alert that pushes LOST into a small screen with weather alerts taking up the rest every few minutes. Plus there are high winds so the HD keeps going in and out. Perfect.
9:12 pm The storm knocked out the HD. You have to be kidding me!!!?!!?
9:17 pm Hurley is awesome!
9:19 pm Anna Lucia’s partner. I love spoilers ahead of time.
9:21 pm Something bad happened to Hurley. Dude is messed up.
9:24 pm What if Ben is right? They all die. Except those who get off the island. And people like Locke and Rousseau who run and hide.
9:31 pm The dude checking in on Hurley is more than meets the eye. Mark my words.
9:33 pm If they are still alive and Dharma (the guy checking in on Hurley wants to find them) did they find a way to hide the island again with the magnetic field?
9:36 pm There have to be 2 different blood trails. There is no way that Naomi doubled back.
9:37 pm I believe Naomi. She really was trying to help them and rescue them. She’s a middle manager at best. Somebody else was giving her orders. She doesn’t know anything going on. But who is her sister? Could it be Kate? Michael’s wife?
9:40 pm Why did they show that creepy dog/Scream/screaming painting again? What is the significance of that?
9:42 pm Was that Desmond’s eye?
9:43 pm That eye didn’t look anything like anything like Locke. and that painting they showed again is definitely a dog portrait again. So was Locke in the chair?
9:46 pm Did Hurley just run in the other direction and then end up back at the cabin again?
9:50 pm Hurley is turning into a man.
9:51 pm How did the other crazy guy see Hurley? Was Hurley imagining him too? Or did he really see him? Other people can see ghosts? Hint. Hint.
9:54 pm The slow fall of Jack Shepherd. The dude is cracking up. He was really going to pull the trigger.
9:57 pm Jorge Garcia (Hurley) has evolved into an exceptional actor.
9:59 pm Why wouldn’t Rose go with Locke? What does she know?
10:02 pm They must have made some sort of pact about not telling. Jack wanted to know if Hurley was “going to tell”.
10:03 pm Hurley interchanged he/it when he said he/it wants us to come back.
10:05 pm How did the helicopter make it to the island if Naomi’s didn’t make it?
First of all I want to thank my lovely gal pal Anna. She’s a real trooper and re-watched the first 3 seasons of LOST with me in less than a month. This usually meant 5 to 6 episodes a night. And 8 or so on the weekends. We took a silent vote and we both chose LOST as the best show of all time. And it’s 10x’s better watching them in a huge chunk like that. You’re able to see a big macro picture and see how the details connect with other as opposed to waiting weeks or months in between episodes. I also thought I would get bored since I’ve already seen all the episodes, but I think they’re better the 2nd time around. I know not everyone has the ability or the time to sit down and obsess over the show like I do so I thought I’d give you my best big picture vantage point or theory now that I’ve seen so many episodes in such a short time.
The island has been around forever. People have lived on the island going way back, probably as far back as centuries (the big 4 toed foot that Sayid saw from the boat, the temple that Alpert was taking the Others to while Ben intercepted the Losties at the radio tower).
Richard Alpert (maybe others, Jacob?) have been on the island this entire time. Ben was brought (summoned) to the island by Jacob. Ben and his father came via the Dharma Initiative. Dharma was founded by Alavar Hanso (his great, great grandfather Magnus Hanso was the captain of the Black Rock and wanted to get to the island to). Hanso wanted the island for it’s powers. He wanted to harness the power for his Dharma Initiative. The Others (referred to as the Hostiles by Dharma) decided to fight back against Dharma. This is when Jacob “summoned” Ben to the island. And Ben and Alpert and the Others “purged” the island of Dharma. I think at that time, they found a way to jam/block any attempt at finding the island. That’s when the electro-magnetic field went up and blocked anybody from finding it.
Dharma wants to get back to the island. But without anybody (the rest of the world) knowing. So they A) sent the plane their on purpose (and other people, Danielle, Desmond) to crash and send in people that would upset the balance of the Others and create an advantage so that they could come back, and/or B) staged the crash of Flight 815 so that the rest of the world would think they were dead and they wouldn’t find the island.
I think the people coming to the island (the Not Penny’s Boat) are a part of the Dharma Initiative trying to make it back onto the island. This is Naomi and her team that are coming to “rescue” them. I think they are coming to A) secure the island and B) to get revenge for Ben and Alpert killing the entire Dharma Initiative that was on the island.
I think Penny and her dad (Widmore) have connections to Ben and those who have been on the island forever. Or at least her dad does. I think Penny wants to find Desmond. And I think Widmore helped facilitate or pushed Desmond to end up on the island so that he’s away from his daughter.
Now for the supernatural. There are a group of people who exist outside of time. Jacob. Alpert. The lady in the ring shop with Desmond. Maybe even the priest at Desmond’s abbey (he had a picture with the ring shop lady on his desk). This group of people lives in the world as everyday people, helping to shepherd or steer people in the right directions when they (the island people, the Others) need something. These are special people. Most of them live off the island, but perhaps from time to time (if they die?) they end up at the island as a sort of sanctuary. I think Alpert is one of these people.
I think Ben, John, and Walt all have some of these “abilities” or “powers”. That’s why Jacob/the island brings them there. Jacob originally chose Ben but Ben lost Jacob’s favor. And Jacob decided that he was done with Ben and now wants to start using John. That’s why Ben didn’t get his cancer healed. And that’s why John did get healed. Jacob is operating/working through John. Everyone around John gets healed. John just doesn’t realize nor is he aware of his powers.
Ben realizes this and tries to use John. But then John makes him take him to Jacob. Ben sees Jacob. But John doesn’t. But John hears him. Maybe Jacob only appears in certain ways. To Ben it was by sight. To John it is by hearing. Jacob wants John to help him. This scares Ben because he knows he’s lost Jacob’s blessing/power. Alpert realizes this and that’s why he gave John the info about Sawyer. Everyone is getting tired of Ben manipulating and lying to stay in control. Everyone knows that Ben is slipping and no longer in charge. Juliet has alluded to this. Alpert has alluded to this. Ben is on the outs and John is the new golden boy. So Ben shoots John. But of course Jacob appears to John as Walt and tells him he has work to do.
So that’s the easy part.
Now . . . I think the island, Jacob, Alpert, the “special” people in the world are very spiritual. Whereas, Dharma is very material and “secular”. I think this is the whole allusion to the black and white, the good and the evil, the yin and the yang. The backgammon pieces. The rocks in the cave.
Now this is my theory. I think there are two monsters. One good. And one evil. Or maybe there is just 1, but it has the ability to see whether a person is good or bad. My guess is that there is a spirit (what we know as the monster, Jacob’s mind?) that floats around the island protecting it. This is the thing that Locke saw that he said was beautiful. Anyway . . . the smoke monster’s job is to protect the island. And again, I think it’s Jacob’s mind or spirit. And has the ability to know whether someone is good or bad.
The Others are made up of a wide group of people. Some like Alpert who stand outside time. Some like Ben who came to the island later. Some who Ben has recruited for experiments (like Juliet). I think “the Others” are made up of a bunch of different group of “Others”. Basically, people the island/Jacob deemed worthy to stay. So they all sort of assimilated into one group.
That pretty much explains the big/meta mythology stuff. Obviously, I think Naomi’s group are there to capture Ben and take the island back for Dharma. Jack and a few people get to leave the island. Something major happens after they leave (or while they’re still there) that makes them want to go back.
I think Ben is the guy in the coffin.
And that’s all I have. See the comments for some mild spoilers.
As a side note, I’ll more than likely live-blog the premiere and post my reflections in real time. Should you be so inclined.
